Meet Emily
Meet Emily! Emily has been interning at Sertoma for nearly three years through the University of Tennessee’s FUTURE program, which supports young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities as they transition into adulthood. This program offers specialized classes, the opportunity to audit classes that interest them, internships, and counseling in academics, careers, and clinical matters.
While the FUTURE program does not confer degrees, completing the two- or four-year program leads to earning a vocational certificate issued by the University of Tennessee. Students have the option to live on campus for two years; however, those opting for the four-year program will need to find off-campus housing. The cost per semester is approximately $11,500, with numerous scholarship opportunities available on their website, along with instructions on how to apply.
At Sertoma, Emily works in the clinic and assists the development department with events. Through the FUTURE program, Emily has not only excelled academically but also discovered the Best Buddies program. Best Buddies fosters one-on-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, inclusive living, and family support for individuals with IDD. Emily has embraced this opportunity, forming numerous friendships and participating in activities like Lady Vols basketball and softball games, as well as attending the Best Buddies Gala.
Outside of her internship and school, Emily enjoys spending time with her Shih Tzu/Poodle mix, Skye, hanging out with friends, and relaxing in her room at home.
Looking ahead, Emily will continue her internship at Sertoma next year, and she has exciting news to share—she’s been hired by UT as a scorekeeper for rec sports! 🎉 Way to go, Emily! All of us at Sertoma are incredibly proud of your achievements!
