Early Years and Discovering Talent

Ashley, a vibrant 30-year-old with autism, has captivated hearts with her stunning singing talent since a young age. Diagnosed at 3 years old, Ashley’s perfect pitch and love for music were evident early on, paving the way for her to shine at Sertoma’s recent fundraiser with her heartfelt rendition of “Wish” from Disney, earning a standing ovation.

Educational and Personal Milestones

Starting special education at age 3, Ashley continued her educational journey in public schools until 22. Her milestone of being potty trained at 11 was a significant achievement for her family. Despite challenges, including behavioral issues and an inability to express when she is in pain which can cause some aggression, Ashley’s journey has been supported by her father, Bob, who became her sole caregiver in 2014. Teresa, now Bob’s wife, joined their family, bringing immense love and understanding to Ashley’s life.

Challenges and Triumphs

Navigating Ashley’s journey has not been without its difficulties. Teresa’s experience at The Tennessee Department of Children’s  Services has been invaluable in helping the family overcome obstacles and ensure Ashley’s well-being. Despite her challenges, Ashley has thrived in programs like Challenger Sports, pursuing her passions in swimming, baseball, and she is working towards her scuba diving certification.

Health and Wellness Journey

Recently, Ashley achieved a remarkable milestone by losing 117 pounds with dedicated support from Teresa, who taught her about nutrition and portion control. Overcoming food-related challenges, Ashley’s journey towards a healthier lifestyle reflects her determination and the loving support of her family.

Dreams and Aspirations

Ashley’s dreams are as inspiring as her journey. With a love for babies, artistry, and her loyal companion, Grace, her yellow lab, Ashley’s future holds aspirations of visiting Disney World and Paris. Her infectious spirit and artistic perfectionism continue to enrich the lives of everyone around her.

Looking Ahead

As Ashley continues to grow, her family hopes to explore residential options at Sertoma, ensuring she continues to lead a fulfilling and safe life. With unwavering support from her family and the Sertoma community, Ashley’s journey exemplifies courage, resilience, and the power of unconditional love.

Everyone deserves a chance to live a life full of purpose and promise. A life that values work, relationships, and the dignity of a home to be proud of. We provide the opportunity for adults with intellectual disabilities to find satisfaction of a life well lived, through work and friendship.

Through no fault of their own, these adults need the support of their community, so we create a home for rest and comfort. We help fulfill the human desire to live a life of purpose and promise.
