From Small-Town Paper to Big-Time Reporting: The Journey of Jimmy Hyams
Early Beginnings: A Teen Journalist’s Dream
At just 16, Jimmy Hyams took the reins of his local newspaper, stepping into the shoes of a writer and sports editor long before most people even think about their career paths. His passion for journalism was evident early on, setting the stage for a career defined by a relentless pursuit of storytelling and reporting.
Education and Ambitions: The Path to Northwestern State University
Jimmy’s educational journey led him to Northwestern State University in Louisiana, where he honed his skills and deepened his understanding of the news industry. His primary goal was to become an exceptional news reporter, and though his career would see him covering a variety of topics, including sports, he remained focused on mastering the art of reporting.
Building a Career: From Local News to Shreveport and Baton Rouge
Jimmy’s career began with a series of significant roles, including running the news bureau at the Shreveport Times and later (delete this word) the Baton Rouge Advocate. His early work covered diverse and challenging topics, from mineshaft accidents to jailbreaks across eight parishes. These experiences laid a solid foundation for his reputation as a dedicated and versatile journalist.
A Memorable Incident: The Natchitoches Times Misadventure
One of Jimmy’s early career highlights was his experience covering a Ducks Unlimited conference for the Natchitoches Times. In a twist of fate, he got lost on his way to the event and, upon being pulled over by the police, found himself in an unexpected situation. Attempting to present his news credentials, he was surprised when the police officer drew his gun. This harrowing experience highlighted the unpredictable nature of journalism and the challenges reporters often face.
Knoxville News Sentinel and a New Chapter: The 1980s and Beyond
In 1985, Jimmy was hired as a sportswriter for the Knoxville News Sentinel, marking a new chapter in his career. The following year, he participated in the Beaver Brook Invitational, where a chance pairing with Kenny Withers, a talented golfer with intellectual disabilities, would profoundly impact his life. Kenny had strong golf skills but his family wanted Jimmy to work with him on the more subtle rules and courtesies of playing golf. Jimmy’s connection with Kenny, grounded in his own experiences with a brother who had challenges, blossomed into a lasting friendship.
A Lasting Friendship: Golf, Challenges, and Triumphs
Jimmy and Kenny’s friendship grew through their shared love of golf. They began playing in golf tournaments in 1986. Jimmy caddied for Kenny nine times (1986-94) at the MCI ProAm in Hilton Head. He took Kenny on 15 golfing trips to Phoenix and they’ve played in the Wytheville (Va.) member-guest more than 15 times.
The Jimmy Hyams & Kenny Withers Golf Challenge: A Legacy of Giving
In 2000, driven by Kenny’s caregiver Sylvia Lacey’s suggestion, Jimmy and Kenny initiated the annual Jimmy Hyams & Kenny Withers Golf Challenge to support Sertoma, an organization aiding individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). What started as a $7,000 fundraiser has grown significantly, raising $66,000 in 2024 alone, with an impressive total of $966,000 raised to date. In just a few days we are very optimistic that we will surpass the $1 million dollar mark at this year’s annual golf challenge! Jimmy’s dedication to Sertoma reflects his commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of those with IDD. Thank you for everything Jimmy!
Family, Retirement, and New Ventures
Jimmy’s family has been a cornerstone of his life. Married to Melanie for 34 years, he acknowledges her unwavering support throughout his journalism career. Together, they have raised two grown children, Leslie and Valerie. Though Jimmy retired in 2023, his plate remains full with activities like covering SEC Spring meetings in Destin, hosting a golf talk radio show on Sports Animal, Sunday Sports Sound Off with Tim Irwin and engaging in freelance work.
A Life Full of Passion: Golf, Pickleball, Hiking, and Family
Retirement has not slowed Jimmy down. He stays active with golf, tennis, pickleball, hiking, and cherishes his time babysitting his new grandson, Orion, twice a week. His dedication to both his professional and personal life underscores a commitment to excellence, community, and family.
Jimmy Hyams’ journey from a young local newspaper editor to a celebrated journalist and community supporter is a testament to his passion, perseverance, and dedication. As he continues to balance his many roles and interests, his story remains an inspiring example of how one person’s journey can leave a lasting impact on their community and beyond.
